Philosophy is concerned with the big questions such as 'What is consciousness?', 'Are we free agents?', 'What makes an action right or wrong?', 'What is rationality?', Why is science the best guide to truth?', and 'Is it possible for machines to think?'. Such questions are fascinating, in part for the way they engage contemporary developments in nearby disciplines such as psychology, neuroscience, economics, biology, and computer science, to name just a few. It is important to appreciate that these big philosophical questions are not merely theoretical. The answers to at least some of them have wide-ranging practical implications.
